Royal Ontario Museum
As part of the course, we take at least two field trips to neighboring establishments to engage with local resources and institutions, to promote first-hand learning experiences. We are privileged to be part of the academic community that neighbors the Royal Ontario Museum, which is home to the largest collection of antiquity in Canada, and allows our students to visit, engage and learn from the artistic heritage of the classical world.
During the visit to the ROM's Greek and Roman galleries, students get a chance to observe, ponder and analyse artworks of the finest caliber, engage in discussions about the classical ideals through their art, myth, and history. A key feature of the visit focuses on a superb variety of Greek vases and sculptures that represent the Greek hero Herakles, which is also our first classical hero encountered in class. Students will have a chance to experience the works having already been familiarised with the
primary literature on the hero, and the visit culminates with enough material to execute the first major paper assignment of art historical analysis.
